How Is All This Stuff on the News About Bill Clinton's Stents Not a Violation of HIPAA?

by HIPAA on January 26, 2012

I'm assuming he did not talk to the press and admit all this information to them. So, how is all this news about his health getting on the news? Isn't it illegal to put it on television and a violation of his privacy as protected by HIPAA?

It’s illegal for whoever told the news organizations to do so, but once they are told, the first amendment protects the news agencies and allows them to put it on the air. HIPAA only covers medical providers, hospitals, clinics, etc., no one else.
